On 21 October 2024, the IntegrateSDGs team convened a panel of experts – most of whom attended the September 2024 Summit of the Future – for a global consultation for major groups and other stakeholders that engage with the HLPF and the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA). They, along with the IntegrateSDGs team’s community of practice leaders – updated stakeholders on the Pact for the Future and the progress of the IntegrateSDGs initiative and its Communities of Practice.

The Pact for the Future, adopted by the UN General Assembly during the September 2024 Summit of the Future, reaffirms commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to urgently accelerating progress towards the goals. Implementation of the actions from the Pact will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and integration of the three dimensions of sustainable development has been recognized as important in this regard. Nevertheless, practice, experience, and research on SDG implementation have shown that integration is one of the most difficult challenges in achieving the goals. Although there has been some progress on integrated approaches, notably at the local level, in research, and by some governments to institutionalize more intersectoral approaches, progress has been limited. Further, insufficient attention has been given to the importance of integration at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and the Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). Inclusive communities of practice incorporating intergenerational partnerships are an important tool for advancing integrated approaches to the SDGs. This is why IntegrateSDGs, a project of Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future supported by the United Nations Environmental Programme and the European Commission, was launched at the 2024 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. IntegrateSDGs is designed to bring together civil society and other stakeholders, academics, policymakers at all levels, and practitioners across disciplines, sectors and specialties to find and implement integrated approaches to accelerate SDG progress. During this 2-hour webinar, we aimed to bring together the knowledge and expertise that exist in these communities of stakeholders and to show how engagement with the IntegrateSDGs initiative’s communities of practice can benefit those working to strengthen the environmental dimension of the SDGs and achieve integrated SDG implementation. The event also highlighted new and emerging issues and challenges not fully addressed in the SDGs that may need to be considered in any post-2030 sustainable development agenda (e.g., artificial intelligence and various new technologies that offer huge potential but also pose significant risks). |
