Description of Objective

Objectives: The overall objective of IntegrateSDGs is to strengthen the environmental dimension of sustainable development through stakeholders’ contribution to the processes leading to the Summit of the Future, and to support the operationalization of elements of the Political Declaration of the 2023 SDG Summit as it relates to stakeholders.

Outputs: Two outputs: 1) Awareness-raising and knowledge-exchange materials on evidence and science-based good practices and lessons learned in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, 2) Capacity-building interventions and products for enhanced cooperation among a diverse range of stakeholders in the implementation of relevant elements of the Political Declaration of the SDG Summit 2023 and engagement with the 2024 HLPF and the Summit of the Future to accelerate SDG implementation.

Outcomes: Two outcomes: 1) Stakeholders have increased awareness through the development of knowledge and information materials on national, regional, and international actions to enhance the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda to contribute to the acceleration of the implementation of the entire Agenda, 2) Stakeholders have enhanced understanding and strengthened capacities and networks to design concrete commitments to effectively engage in the implementation of relevant elements of the SDG Summit 2023 Political Declaration to contribute to acceleration of SDG implementation.

Activities: Documents on best practices and partnerships, stakeholder engagement at the 6th session of the United Nations Environmental Assembly, stakeholder engagement at the May 2024 Civil Society Conference in Nairobi, the https://integratesdgs.org/ website and database, a series of webinars including one at the 2024 HLPF and Summit of the Future Action Days, Establishment of three communities of practice based on UNEP’s three strategic objectives: climate stability – living in harmony with nature – and towards a pollution-free planet, and based on UNEP’s three strategic objectives: climate stability, living in harmony with nature, and towards a pollution-free planet.

Resources: A team of three experts in the area of each of the communities of practice, three community of practice assistants, a project manager, and a project support member.

Interlinkages?: Strengthening the environmental dimension is especially urgent as the world currently grapples with the interlinked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution which affect all three dimensions of the 2030 Agenda. While keeping this comprehensive vision, the protracted environmental crisis requires particular attention related to the effective implementation of the Agenda in its entirety and the strengthening of the environmental dimension in all SDGs, in addition to ensuring its full integration when implementing the 2030 Agenda. Implementation requires the participation of all stakeholders. There is a need to expand the base of non-governmental stakeholders involved in the implementation and monitoring of the SDGs to strengthen the environmental dimension. This necessarily involves formally connecting stakeholders engaged in processes of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), and those closely following processes in the lead-up to the HLPFs and the Summit of the Future. The SDG Summit (HLPF under the auspices of the General Assembly) held in September 2023 produced clear commitments to rescue the SDGs by setting out national visions for transformation. Non-state stakeholders necessarily have a crucial role to play in contributing to the success of the SDGs, including through producing their own commitments and action plans to follow through on those commitments to accelerate the implementation at this mid-point to 2030.
The interlinked triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, has become prominent and providing solutions ever more urgent. This is why, as mentioned earlier, the project will aim to showcase the integrated nature of the environment in all SDGs and bring issues from key environmental conferences to the processes leading up to the Summit of the Future in 2024.

Which SDG?: SDG 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation, SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient,t and sustainable, SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts, SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, SDG 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
